The Berkeley Forum In Discussion with Alexandra Petri

Special Event | November 15 | 6-8 p.m. |  Free Speech Movement Cafe (Moffitt Library)

 Alexandra Petri, The Washington Post

Library, Free Speech Movement Café Educational Programs

The Berkeley Forum is excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Free Speech Movement Café Educational Programs Committee in
holding a forum with Alexandra Petri, the columnist behind The Washington Post’s ComPost blog and author of
A Field Guide to Awkward Silences. In 2010, Ms. Petri became the youngest person to have a column in the
Post. As a columnist, Ms. Petri writes satirical and lighthearted pieces on contemporary news, politics, and points
of view. In her column, ComPost, she aims to make the world seem a little less terrifying by offering her
wisdom and wit for an event she calls: “Rational Optimism In A Time When Everything Seems To Be On
Fire.”. This event will be in traditional Berkeley Forum structure with a staff member moderating a forum with Ms.
Petri after allowing Ms. Petri to give an introductory speech. The Berkeley Forum moderator will ask Ms.
Petri prepared, thought-provoking questions. More importantly, in The Berkeley Forum’s tradition of
intellectually engaging the community, audience members will be allowed to ask questions to Ms. Petri after
the moderated portion. After the event, audience members will have the chance to speak with her one-on-one.
With this structure, The Berkeley Forum will truly allow the community audience members to have a
critical, engaged, and in-depth discussion about a topic that is very resonant and very timely in Berkeley and
across college campuses.

The Library attempts to offer programs in accessible, barrier-free settings. If you think you may require disability-related accommodations, please contact the event sponsor,, ideally at least two weeks prior to the event.
