Translating the Precision Electrophile Signaling Code
Seminar | September 5 | 11 a.m.-12 p.m. | 120 Latimer Hall
Prof. Yimon Aye, Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Cornell University
Precisely timed and spatially regulated electrophilic chemical signals are the essence of biochemical redox signaling. However, defining the precise biological impacts of localized signals that engage with specific protein targets under physiologic conditions has proven to be highly challenging. This talk presents a unique set of proximity-directed chemical tools that enables interrogation into... More >

Seminar 217, Risk Management: Sparse Low Rank Dictionary Learning
Seminar | September 5 | 11 a.m.-1 p.m. | 639 Evans Hall
Speaker: Robert Anderson, UC Berkeley
Center for Risk Management Research
Sparse Dictionary Learning (SDL) can be used to extract narrow factors driving stock returns from a stock returns matrix, provided the returns are generated by sparse factors alone. We describe progress on a variant called Sparse Low Rank Dictionary Learning (SLRDL), designed to simultaneously extract broad and narrow factors for the returns matrix, when the returns are generated by both types... The Role of Supply and Demand in Efficient Health Care Delivery: Evidence From Utah
Colloquium | September 5 | 12:40-2 p.m. | 714C University Hall
Ben Handel, PhD, Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley Economics
The project studies the implications of several distinct approaches to managing consumer health care using an all-payer claims data base from the state of Utah. We use forced switches where consumers must join one insurance model or the other to identify effects on cost and health. We study (i) consumers who join Select Health, which manages care through its health care partner intermountain as... More >

3-Manifold Seminar: Algorithmic homeomorphism of 3-manifolds as a corollary of geometrization
Seminar | September 5 | 2:10-3:30 p.m. | 740 Evans Hall

Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry: Auslander-Reiten duality for commutative rings: a survey of some recent developments
Seminar | September 5 | 3:45-4:45 p.m. | 939 Evans Hall
Hailong Dao, University of Kansas
Let R be a local Gorenstein ring with an isolated singularity. The Auslander-Reiten duality is a duality between certain Ext-groups of (M,N) where M,N are maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over R. In this talk I will describe this duality and give an elementary proof. Then I will discuss possible extensions and the connection to the Kapustin-Li formula for matrix factorizations (when the ring is a... More >
