A surveillance society is taking hold. Video cameras, satellites, drones peer constantly from the skies. Smartphones, license-plate cameras and fast-pass lanes track our movements, keeping a detailed record of our speed and location. Retailer record and analyze each purchase by every consumer. Smart appliances know whether we turned out the lights, what we have in our refrigerator, our preferred temperature, what were watching, and what were saying. What are the various social, legal and ethical implications of technological advances that make it easier to be watched, and how are different groups pushing for and against policies that would govern the limits of state surveillance?
