Fixing Our Childrens Food Environment: An evening to inspire solutions and raise funds for the Berkeley Food Institute, featuring Bettina Elias Siegel
Colloquium | March 2 | 5:30-7:30 p.m. | David Brower Center, Tamalpais Room
2150 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704
Please join the Berkeley Food Institute in welcoming Bettina Elias Siegel to discuss her new book Kid Food: The Challenge of Feeding Children in a Highly Processed World. What are the roles of parents and non-parents in ensuring that all of our communitys children have access to safe, affordable, and nourishing food? How have some junk food companies sought to leverage every possible opportunity to sell their products to impressionable young future customers and what can we do to push back? How can research and practice inform public policy on childrens food issues? We will explore these and other questions in a lively interactive forum where your questions and ideas are welcome.
Bettina is a mother of two and a nationally recognized writer and advocate on issues relating to children and food policy. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, Bettina practiced intellectual property, advertising, and food law in New York City before she became interested in improving the food in her childrens school district, Houston ISD. Soon after she launched The Lunch Tray, a blog about all things related to kids and food, in school and out. Bettina spearheaded three victorious Change.org petition campaigns relating to school children and food, making her one of the most successful petitioners in the organizations history. Shes the author of the free 50-page e-book, The Lunch Trays Guide to Getting Junk Food Out of Your Childs Classroom, which has been downloaded free by thousands of parents and is now in its second edition.
BFI's faculty director Kristine Madsen will serve as discussant. Join us for a book signing and reception with Bettina Elias Siegel after the event.
