Student Arithmetic Geometry Seminar: Essential dimension of algebraic stacks

Seminar | September 13 | 4:10-5 p.m. | 891 Evans Hall

 Anningzhe Gao, UC Berkeley

 Department of Mathematics

In this talk, I will give an introduction of the essential dimension of functors, in particular I will concentrate on the essential dimension of algebraic stacks. We will start by the basic facts of stacks (if necessary), then give the statement of the genericity theorem proved by Brosnan, Reichstein and Vistoli. As an application, we will calculate the essential dimension of the moduli stack of n-pointed curves of genus g with some choices of (n,g).
