Natural Resources, Environmental Challenges and Youth Leaders from Southeast Asia: A Forum on Innovations and Solutions

 Center for Southeast Asia Studies

This forum will present current perspectives on environmental issues in Southeast Asia as experienced and envisioned today by young activists and students from the region. The participants are visiting UC Berkeley as part of a program managed by the East-West Center in Honolulu and sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI).

Brunei
Mohd Al-Amin Afiq Safwat BIN ABARAHAN – works on issues concerning cultural heritage and environmental sustainability. He has a master’s degree in Teaching and Product Design & Manufacture from the University of Brunei Darussalam

Cambodia
China KIM – research interests in climate change, water quality, and development. He is an undergraduate student at Pannasastra University where he is working towards a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science.

Indonesia
Laila Sari ANDHIKA - Creator of Aksi Peduli Wisata Bahara, a community group that engages in marine tourism and natural resources management on Madura island in the Java Sea. She is a graduate of Trunojoyo University with a degree in Marine Science.

Inci Muhammad DARMAWAN - Founder of Mata Bugis, which is focused on solving marine environmental issues and reducing plastic waste production in South Sulawesi. He is an undergraduate student at Hasanuddin University and is majoring in Management.

Eka Meynia HELENDRI - Creator of Vlogreenesia, a project which aims to influence others though social media to stop using plastic. She is currently a student of Candradimuka University in South Sumatra working towards a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Gusti Ayu Isma YANTI - Founder of ‘Chelonimer,’ a startup that recycles used plastic bottles into jewelry. She is currently studying Oceanography at the Bandung Institute of Technology.

Laos
Alisa LUANGRATH – works in Vang Vieng on a project to recycle plastic waste among tourism operators. She is currently working on a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at the National University of Laos.

Malaysia
Kai Syin “Lyvia” CHONG - In-House Researcher of Turtle Lab at the Taaras Beach and Spa Resort off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, and a Graduate Research Assistant of the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU). She is working towards a Master of Science degree in Zoology from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

Kai Ren TAN - Founding Director and Principal Advisor to a student-led sustainability movement called ‘ASTAR Cares.’ Currently working on ‘The Rimba Project’, a living lab that focuses on campus greening and urban biodiversity conservation.

Myanmar
Van Tha CEU – a junior agronomist for the Myanmar Institute for Integrated Development (MIID). He is a graduate of Yezin Agricultural University with a degree in Agricultural Science specializing in Agricultural Microbiology

Hnin Phyu SIN - A regional ambassador at Eco-generation, where she reports regional environmental issues on a global platform. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Forestry from the University of Forestry and Environmental Science in Myanmar.

Philippines
Jerica Marie CAWALO – A biologist with the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR); Project Manager for Save Philippine Seas; and co-founder of Project SEAyasat, which seeks to assess the degree of compliance of existing environmental laws and municipal ordinances. She is working on a master's degree in Environment and Natural Resource Management at the University of the Philippines Open University.

Romina Therese Sison LIM - Marine biologist and founder of Project AlaGALAan, a campaign geared towards the protection of the natural environment and ecosystems through responsible eco-tourism.

Singapore
Ying Xuan CHUA - Co-founder of Accommodate, an education initiative that uses role-play and simulation to raise awareness about land redevelopment issues. She is currently an undergraduate student of Nanyang Technological University majoring in Environmental Earth Systems Sciences.

Thailand
Pawattapum CHAROENSUK – works on issues concerning environmental policy and climate change. He has a degree in International Relations from Thammasat University.

Setthawut KONGTEN – interested in issues concerning sustainability and recycling. He received his bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from Chiang Mai University.

Sasina TANGPHITTHAYAWET - Staff member of ‘Trash Hero,’ a nonprofit organization that organizes community based projects to remove and reduce waste. She is currently an undergraduate majoring in Thai at Chulalongkorn University.

Timor Leste
Agustinho Pinteus Vianci DE CARVALHO – Staff of the Avansa Agrikultura Project, which aims to accelerate sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the horticulture sector. He received a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture at TAFE North Queensland.

Vietnam
Trang Minh HOANG - Junior Project Officer for the World Wide Fund for Nature Vietnam. She is a graduate of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam where she received a bachelor’s degree in International Communications

Khac Quyen LE - Co-founder of the Nature Exploration project, a forest education program. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Vietnam National University and is pursuing a master’s degree in Biology, with a concentration on primates.

Hoang Huu Huy NGUYEN – staff at the Vietnam Tuna Association, responsible for training about endangered marine species, logbook, bycatch as well as legislation. He graduated from Nha Trang University with a degree in Fisheries Management.
