Topology Seminar (Introductory Talk): Building blocks for hyperbolic manifolds

Seminar | March 20 | 2-3 p.m. | 740 Evans Hall | Note change in location

 Matthew Stover, Temple University

 Department of Mathematics

I'll introduce three ways to build hyperbolic manifolds: arithmetic groups, "interbreeding", and "inbreeding". The first is purely algebraic. The second leads to the famous nonarithmetic examples of Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro. The third is due to Agol, further studied by Belolipetsky-Thomson. Further, we will discuss concrete 3-dimensional examples via links in $S^3$ and belted sums.
