Living in a Gender Creative World

Lecture | February 22 | 12:30-1:30 p.m. |  Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse

 2020 Addison, Berkeley, CA 94704

 Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)

Across cultures, gender is undergoing a sea change. No longer is the binary gender system bedrock; instead, gender has become moving boulders. We are challenged to un-learn everything we learned about gender and replace old tropes with new paradigms that make room for infinite variations in gender. Dr. Ehrensaft will share what she has learned and open up a dialogue about the gender affirmative model, which recognizes the complex interplay of nature, nurture, and culture that go into any one person's gender development. She will call on her work at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Child and Adolescent Gender clinic with children and families to illustrate the model in action.

Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D. is a developmental and clinical psychologist and associate professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. She is Director of Mental Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender and chief psychologist at their gender clinic housed at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ehrensaft is author of The Gender Creative Child and Gender Born, Gender Made, and lectures and publishes nationally and internationally on the subject of gender nonconformity, child development, and family relations.

Admission is $10 for the general public. Free for OLLI members and UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff.
