New Trends and Current Directions in Balinese Performing Arts

Dr. I Wayan Dibia (Ph.D., UCLA), renowned dancer and scholar will discuss ways that the contemporary Balinese performance scene incorporates past traditions while constantly innovating. In Bali the concept of “tradition” is defined by personal innovations in which performers explore their relationships with past practices in terms of the contemporary world. Dr. Dibia will present the latest trends in Balinese performing arts. He will discuss the slippery areas between sacred and secular performance.

This presentation will include demonstrations of various dance forms, include Topeng (male masked dances), Legong (a classical female dance), and Teruna Jaya (a 20th century form of androgynous kebyar style with many root sources). Dr. I Wayan Dibia will dance with Dr. Ni Made Wirathini (Ph.D., Udayana University). Both presenters are on the faculty of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI Denpasar, Institut Seni Indonesia), and directors of their own arts organization, Geoks, of Singapadu, Bali, and are currently in residence with the Bay Area’s Gamelan Sekar Jaya.
