An attempt to use Thompson’s groups as local scale transformations on quantum spin chains led to the discovery of some geometrically defined unitary group representations. In particular for the same quantum spin chains that gave rise to the Jones polynomial via the braid groups, an alternative history would allow it to arise from the Thompson group.
