Agnieszka Holland adapted Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved tale of an enterprising girl (Kate Maberly) who uncovers secrets at her uncle’s forbidding estate, including an abandoned garden and a neglected boy. Together the children make the garden bloom and transform the lives of all who live there. Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times: “The Secret Garden is elegantly expressive, a discreet and lovely rendering of the children’s classic. . . .
