Performing Arts - Music | October 29 | 8-10 p.m. | Freight & Salvage
2020 Addison St., Berkeley, CA 94704
UC Jazz Ensembles, the organization dedicated to the study and performance of jazz at UC Berkeley, will be hosting its annual fall concert next month. Since 1968, UC Jazz has upheld the jazz performance tradition on the Berkeley campus, providing student musicians with opportunities to study, appreciate, and perform jazz while making lifelong friends and engaging the campus community. This event will bring students, alumni, and community members together for a night of live jazz performed by UC Jazzs three most advanced ensembles. The combos will perform a broad and exciting sampling of various jazz styles, including classic material from the 1960s and 1970s, swing, latin, and contemporary, with much focus on improvisation and group interaction.
ABOUT UC JAZZ ENSEMBLES
UC Jazz Ensembles is one of the most respected and historically prominent musical organizations at UC Berkeley, and was founded by students in 1968. It is an on-campus musical organization comprising 12-14 small jazz combos that rehearse weekly and perform regularly for the campus community. Both undergraduate and graduate students of any major/field may participate, and community members are occasionally invited to participate in the program. UC Jazz is not a part of the universitys music department, and most members do not receive any academic credit for participating. As such, participation in UC Jazz is spurred purely by a desire to practice this rich and unique art form. Providing students with comfortable spaces in which to perform and appreciate jazz is one of the programs major goals. Each semester, it hosts numerous concerts and events, including the acclaimed Jazz in the Loft (formerly Jazz in the Basement), a concert series loved and frequented by students, and the bi-annual advanced combo showcase at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse. UC Jazz is directed by jazz drummer, composer, and educator Ted Moore, and classes are taught by a faculty comprising some of the best players and educators in the Bay Area.
