Movie Screening and Discussion: Singing in Exile
Film - Documentary | April 26 | 7-9 p.m. | 105 North Gate Hall
Virginia Pattie Kerovpyan; Aram Kerovpyan
With the song we face ourselves, we cannot lie ... Aram and Virginia, an Armenian couple from the diaspora, transmit an ancestral chant tradition (traditional monodic singing), which is on the verge of disappearance, to a troupe of European actors. In view of creating a theatrical performance, the couple takes the troupe of the Wroclaw Grotowski Institute on an initiatory journey to Anatolia where this art once flourished and Armenian civilization was annihilated. On their way, the questionings of the actors allow the wealth of this culture to resurface: the chant becomes the language of creation and sharing, the breath of life. It is a journey where sounds, music, words, bodies and cries recount a memory.
