MENA Salon: The Jamal Khashoggi Case and Regional Rivalries

Workshop | November 2 | 3-4 p.m. | 340 Stephens Hall

 Center for Middle Eastern Studies

The Jamal Khashoggi case continues to have an enormous impact on international relations in the Middle East. Turkey has been at the center of the investigation, providing key evidence to the global audience, and pinning Saudi Arabia and MBS to the crime. This has given the Turkish government the appearance of the moral high ground despite its own abysmal track record with regard to protecting journalists and securing free speech. Given the irony of the situation, questions haven arisen about what is motivating the region's players in formulating their responses to this case. This week, in light of the ongoing confusion around the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, we will try to address how these developments fit into the grand scheme of power and influence in the region.
