Learn about how animal and human anatomy (bones!) with this interactive display on how archaeologists use bones to study diet, cooking and food preparation practices, and human health of past societies. SCI@Cal

Dig like an Archaeologist!

Learn how archaeologists record their finding in the field.We’ll have a mock dig site, dig kits for younger kids, and hands-on activities,including mapping for older kids. The Archaeological Research Facility at UC Berkeley is an actual dig site itself and the location of the first fraternity house west of the Mississippi! Come see excavated artifacts from the old fraternity! SCI@Cal

Paleoethnobotany: Ancient Plants and the People who Used Them

Find out what archaeologists investigating ancient plants learn about ancient cultures day-to-day activities, diet, cooking and food preparation. Use a microscope, try to identify and then draw ancient seeds! SCI@Cal

Play with Clay -Ceramics

Ceramics and pots are some of the most common artifacts that are uncovered in archaeological excavations. Archaeologists rarely find ancient pots that are whole in excavation and a common laboratory task is to reassemble the finds. Try your hand at making and decorating your own clay pot to take home. Or take part in the art of ceramic reconstruction- it’s like putting back together a 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzle from the past! SCI@Cal

Cave and Rock Art Painting

Prehistoric rock art sites are well known throughout the world. Try your brush and hand- literally- at making paints and help paint a rock art mural! SCI@Cal
