If one wants to count J-holomorphic curves in a general symplectic manifold, often one cannot get a good count simply by choosing a sufficiently generic J. Instead one needs a more elaborate perturbation scheme in order the define what is known as the virtual moduli cycle or virtual fundamental class, This talk will explain different ways of defining this, mentioning in particular new simpler orbifold models.
