ABOUT THE EXHBITION

The Fall 2017 seminar, Americans on the Road, investigated the period from 1950 to 1980 when Americans took to the road in record numbers, creating a nationwide culture of roadside tourism and commerce. At a time when driving meant freedom and pleasure, this new roadside landscape produced not only new types of space, architecture and advertising but also introduced new modes of perception, behavior and experience, transforming space and time in unprecedented ways.

This exhibition documents 12 students’ varied responses to this historical phenomenon with interpretations that go far beyond documentary objectivity to explore a broad range of political, social, physical, psychological and aesthetic dimensions suggested by the course material and their own interests.
