Advancing Early Childhood Development: From Science to Scale
Colloquium | October 3 | 12:40-2 p.m. | 714C University Hall
Lia Fernald, PhD, MBA, UC Berkeley, School of Public Health
Hundreds of millions of young children experience adversities that disrupt formative developmental processes and contribute to life-long disparities in health, cognition, educational attainment, socio-emotional functioning, and economic productivity. This talk will review a 3-paper series published in the Lancet (2017), in which we estimate the number of children at risk, examine global commitments to early child development, and rigorously review effects of early child development programs. Finally, we identify ways that interventions promoting child development can be feasibly brought to scale at limited additional cost through integration into existing health, nutrition and social-sector services.
