A Tale of Two Women: From postwar Italian cinema to human rights today

What does sexual violence look like when it becomes a war strategy? How does the memory of such an extreme event evolve over time, and is this evolution any different in the aftermath of authoritarian politics?
In the current political climate of the United States there is renewed interest in past authoritarian regimes, including Mussolini’s Italy, and the postwar order that emerged after World War II. As a case in point, UC scholars will join an Italian film expert in reflecting on the struggle to confront one historic war crime that occurred in Italy after the fall of the Mussolini regime. The meaning of this event has shifted over the past seventy-three years as the memory passed through the filters of literature, film, opera, personal memoir, and revisionist history. By drawing on Italian studies, history, and law, the panelists will compare the evolving memory of the incident identified with Two Women (title of three creative works spanning 70 years) to a narrative of human rights. The executive director of Berkeley’s Human Rights Center will discuss how the award-winning Sexual Violence Program combats impunity for similar crimes today. Their conversation will be framed by the presentation of three classic Italian films (April 24, 25, 26) and one celebrated American play (April 27) about Italy during and after wartime.
This program is part of the series “A Tale of Two Women from postwar Italian cinema to human rights today,” April 24-27 at UC Berkeley and The Marsh Theater, presented in recognition of Italy’s celebration of Liberation Day on April 25.
