Race Matters in Schools: The Significance of School Racial Climate and Microaggressions for Adolescents and Emerging Adults

Colloquium | March 8 | 12:10-1:15 p.m. | 5101 Tolman Hall

Christy Byrd, Assistant Professor, UC Santa Cruz

Institute of Personality and Social Research

This talk will review Dr. Byrd's research on students' perceptions of interactions and messages about race and culture in schools. As the United States becomes increasingly diverse, schools remain locations where surface-level messages of tolerance and respect for all hide deep conflicts over race, culture, and identity. How do students understand the way race operates in their schools, and more importantly, what is the effect on students' psychological well-being and academic achievement?
