3D Human Brain Models and Nanoplatforms for Prognostics and Therapeutics of Neurological Disorders: Nano Seminar Series

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. However, no definitive cure for AD exists due to lack of limited model systems that accurately reflect AD-related immunity in human brains, nor for a drug development strategy for delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and assessment of drug efficacy in human brains.

Here, I present micro-scaled 3D environments that reconstruct AD human brain tissue and a BBB as the test platforms mimicking AD pathology. I also demonstrate nanobiosensors utilizing aptamers and surface plasmonics for the purpose of monitoring the brain's activities with high sensitivity, specificity, and stability.

Furthermore, I present preliminary results on a bio-conjugated-cPOSS-MSN nanoplatform to achieve multitargeting and multivalence effect in a central nervous system.

Hansang Cho did his PhD in BioE at UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) and postdoc at Harvard Medical School. Awards include an LLNL Lawrence fellowship, the CRI Duke Energy Special Initiatives, and the Cure Alzheimer's Fund. He joined the UNC faculty in 2014.
