Nonparametric network comparison
Seminar | August 24 | 4-5 p.m. | 332 Evans Hall
Patrick Wolfe, Purdue University
Understanding how two networks differ, or quantifying the degree to which a single network departs from a given model, is a challenging question in modern mathematical statistics. Here we show how subgraph densities, which for large graphs play a role analogous to moments in the context of random variables, enable a natural means of nonparametric network comparison. Coupled with a partial order... More >
Mathematics Department Colloquium: Semi-algebraic sets of integer points
Colloquium | August 24 | 4:10-5 p.m. | 60 Evans Hall
Günter M. Ziegler, Freie Universität Berlin
We look at sets of integer points in the plane, and discuss possible definitions of when such a set is "complicated"—this might be the case if it is not the set of integer solutions to some system of polynomial equations and inequalities. Let’s together work out lots of examples, and on the way let’s try to develop criteria and proof techniques$\ldots$.
The examples that motivated our... More >

Kurosawas adaptation of an American detective novel is both a superb, suspenseful thriller, and a Dostoyevskian metaphysical probe into the ambiguities of guilt and innocence. In one of his finest performances, Toshiro Mifune portrays a wealthy executive who must pay ransom for the release of his chauffeurs son when the boy is mistaken for his son by a kidnapper. Kurosawa creates a constant,... More >
