Mounting research is implicating sugarspecifically the added sugars we consume from soda and sweetsas a key contributor to numerous chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Join a panel of experts in nutrition and public health to discuss the role of added sugar in the obesity and diabetes epidemics, including how its risks compare to those of saturated fat, formerly the leading dietary villain. Panelists will also address topics such as the role of the beverage industry, sugar and public policy, the interaction of sugar with fat in the diet, and standards for sugar intake worldwide.
Janet King PhD is a senior scientist at Childrens Hospital Oakland Research Institute. She is also a professor emeritus of nutritional sciences at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. Dr. King is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the USDA Research Hall of Fame. She is recognized internationally for her research in maternal nutrition and human zinc requirements, and she is the Director of the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG), an organization committed to improving zinc nutrition among vulnerable populations worldwide. She chaired the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
Ronald M. Krauss MD is a senior scientist and Dolores Jordan Endowed Chair at Childrens Hospital Oakland Research Institute, professor of medicine at UCSF, and adjunct professor of nutritional sciences at UC Berkeley. Dr. Krauss is board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolism, and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, a Fellow of the American Society of Nutrition and the American Heart Association, and a Distinguished Fellow of the International Atherosclerosis Society. He was the founding chair of the AHA Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism, and is a National Spokesperson for the AHA. He has received numerous awards including the AHA Scientific Councils Distinguished Achievement Award, the Centrum Center For Nutrition Science Award of the American Society for Nutrition, and the Distinguished Leader in Insulin Resistance from the International Committee for Insulin Resistance.
Kristine Madsen MD, MPH is an associate professor and faculty director of the Berkeley Food Institute at UC Berkeley. She is a pediatrician and research scientist with expertise in the design and evaluation of interventions related to pediatric obesity and health inequalities. Her research is focused on identifying policies and programs that will improve the nutrition and physical activity environments for youth and their families, and reduce health inequities
Gary Taubes is cofounder and senior scientific advisor of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He's an award-winning science and health journalist, the author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, and a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for the journal Science. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Esquire. He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers. He is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research.
