Ecologism and Social Justice in Three Germanies
Lecture | March 17 | 12-1 p.m. | 201 Moses Hall
Tim Brown, Professor of History at Northeastern University
Did environmentalism help bring down the Berlin Wall? In Ecologism and Social Justice in Three Germanies, Timothy Scott Brown will demonstrate that it did. Examining the development of grassroots environmental politics in the Communist East and the capitalist West from the upheaval of 1968 through the early years of newly-unified Germany, the talk will trace the emergence in the 1970s and 1980s of a new border-crossing utopian configuration blending socialism and science, spirituality and human rights. Exploring an historical case study of social movements connecting across Cold War boundaries, the talk will open up two broader, still-relevant questions: how can saving the planet inform our politics? And what sort of politics is consistent with saving the planet?
