Fractions From a Number Line Approach

From July 30 through Aug. 3, 2012, the Bay Area Mathematics Project (BAMP) invites teachers from grades 3 through 6 to participate in the Fractions from a Number Line Approach Institute, which will offer unique opportunities to view the development of fraction concepts and skills through the lens of the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CaCCSS-M). The California Mathematics Project (CMP) Task Force has produced wonderful professional development materials about fractions on the number line, which have been successfully implemented at other CMP sites. The Education Development Center (EDC) has done very interesting work on using diagramming to help student solve word problems involving fractions; we will use their materials as well. In addition, we have other materials, including videos, which we will use to illustrate effective pedagogical practices useful in grades 3-6 throughout the Common Core math curriculum. We will have some truly expert guest presenters as well. We will arrange for one follow-up session at the institute.

As we engage with content from CCSS-M Fraction Progression, we will remain mindful of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, which define mathematical proficiency. Academic language development, equity, and differentiation issues will be addressed as well.
