BFX: Jordi SavallPerforming Arts - Music | June 9 – 10, 2012 every day | First Congregational Church 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley, CA 94704 Jordi Savall Dimitri Psonis; David Mayoral Cal Performances will present two distinct concerts by the renowned viola da gambist Jordi Savall as part of the upcoming Berkeley Festival & Exhibit (June 3-10, 2012). Conceived and created by Savall, both concerts take the form of a dialogue of Arabo-Andalusian, Jewish and Christian music from medieval Spain and around the Mediterranean. The first concert, Orient-Occident, focuses on music from ancient Spain, the Ottoman Empire, medieval Italy and Persian Afghanistan, and will take place Saturday, June 9, at 8:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. On the following day, Sunday, June 10, at 3:00 p.m., the second concert, Istanbul will feature Sephardic, Armenian and Turkish music showcased in Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemirs The Book of Science and Music, published in 1710 and based on his many years in Istanbul. Both concerts feature Savall on rebec, bowed lyre and rebab, with longtime collaborators Dimitri Psonis on santur and Moorish guitar and David Mayoral on percussion.
