Albright\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\n\nDr. Parney Albright was named the eleventh Director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)\, on December 1\, 2011. He is responsible for the management of the Laboratory and also serves as the President of Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS)\, LLC.\n\nDr. Albright has extensive experience in executive leadership\; policy direction\; strategic planning\; Congressional and Executive branch interactions\; financial and personnel management of large mission-focused science and technology organizations\; and research\, development\, testing\, and evaluation of national security technologies and systems. He has a broad and deep understanding of US and international civilian and military requirements\, functions\, and processes in the national security arena.\n\nDr. Albright has served as the Principal Associate Director for Global Security at LLNL where he has provided the vision and leadership at the Laboratory for its efforts to broaden its engagement with the national security and energy communities. He has guided the Laboratory toward an emphasis on understanding mission sponsor needs and constraints\, and enhancing the Laboratory’s reputation by focusing a disciplined project execution and delivery culture. Dr. Albright has successfully developed strong programmatic partnerships with Sandia and Los Alamos and has led the efforts of the three laboratories to reduce barriers that impede their ability to apply their capabilities in the service of a broader set of sponsors.

In particular\, this talk will focus on our recent density functional theory and experimental study of the metastability behaviors exhibited by these ultra-thin oxide films at room temperature [S. DESCRIPTION:Patrick van der Wel\, Assistant Professor\, University of Pittsburg\n\nAggregation of proteins into plaques or amyloid fibrils occurs in a variety of human diseases\, including Alzheimer’s\, Huntington’s Disease (HD) and prion diseases. Despite intense interest\, much remains unknown about the underlying molecular causes – making rational design of treatment strategies difficult. One of the key challenges relates to the fact that the atomic structures of fibrils as well as their precursors are very difficult to characterize. I will discuss our efforts using solid-state NMR to characterize amyloid-like fibrils related to HD and other amyloid-related diseases. We study such fibrils by magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR in order to characterize structural features of the fibrils. This involves the detection of local conformation based on site-specific chemical shifts\, measurement of distances within and between protein monomers\, as well as torsion angle constraints. We leverage NMR’s sensitivity to dynamics to probe site-specific molecular motion\, which reveals surface exposure and other key aspects of the aggregates. Part of the discussion will also focus on the implications of SSNMR-derived fibrillar structure for our understanding of the molecular mechanism of fibril formation and disease toxicity. The role of protein domain swapping and a-helix-a-helix interactions in the aggregation pathway will be examined.

DESCRIPTION:Dietre Suter\, Professor\, TU Dortmund University\n\nComputers that operate according to the laws of quantum mechanics may lead to qualitatively more powerful devices that can solve computational problems for which no efficient classical algorithm exists. The price for this advantage is that information stored in quantum mechanical systems is also qualitatively more fragile - both with respect to environmental noise as well as to deviations in the control fields that drive the computation. To make large-scale quantum computing reliable requires therefore to (i) protect the quantum information against environmental noise and (ii) implement error correction schemes that are compatible with the quantum mechanical information. We have implemented such scheme in different physical systems\, using nuclear spin ensembles as well as single electronic and nuclear systems.

Kagan\, University of Pennsylvania\, Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering\n\nAdvances in synthetic methods allow a wide range of semiconductor\, metal\, and metal-oxide nanocrystals (NCs) to be tailored in size and shape and to be used as building blocks in the design of NC solids. However\, the long\, insulating ligands commonly employed in the synthesis of colloidal NCs inhibit strong interparticle coupling and charge transport once NCs are assembled into the solids state as NC arrays. We introduce short\, compact ligands to exchange the long\, insulating ligands used in synthesis and increase interparticle coupling. In semiconductor NCs\, the strong interparticle coupling leads to red-shifts in the optical absorption and concomitant increases in carrier mobilities. Doping of the NC thin films by thermal diffusion of low temperature\, high diffusivity metals is used to control the carrier statistics\, shift the Fermi energy\, and fill traps. I will give examples where semiconductor NC solid design is used to realize high mobility n- and p-type materials for field-effect transistors and integrated circuits and for solar photovoltaics. In metal NCs\, chemically-controlled coupling allows us to tailor a dielectric-to-metal phase transition seen by a 1010 range in DC conductivity and a dielectric permittivity ranging from everywhere positive to everywhere negative across the whole range of optical frequencies. The compact ligand allow us to realize a "diluted metal" with optical properties akin to next-generation metamaterials. I will show we can harness the properties of metal NCs by using nanoimprint lithography to print large-area metamaterials on glass and plastics with widely tailorable optical properties.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Xu Yang\, Department of Mathematics\, UC Santa Barbara\n\nIn this talk\, we give a mathematical derivation of a pathway- based mean-field model for E. coli chemotaxis based on the moment closure in kinetic theory. The pathway based model incorporate the most recent intracellular chemical dynamics. The derived moment system\, under some assumptions\, gets to the chemotaxis model pro- posed in [G. Si\, T. Wu\, Q. Quyang and Y. Tu\, Phys. Rev. Lett.\, 109 (2012)\, 048101]\, especially an important physical assumption made in which can be understood explicitly in this new moment system. We obtain the Keller-Segal limit by considering the moment system in the regime of long time and strong tumbling rate. Numerical experiments are presented to show the agreement of the moment system with (individual based) signaling pathway- based E. coli chemotaxis simulator ([L. Jiang\, Q. Ouyang and Y. Tu\, PLoS Comput. Biol.\, 6 (2010)\, e1000735]).

Odom\, Department of Chemistry\, Northwestern University\n\nNanotechnology offers new strategies for minimally invasive and localized approaches to diagnose and treat cancer. Recently\, nanoparticles (NPs) have been explored in a range of applications\, including drug delivery vehicles\, imaging contrast probes\, and therapeutic agents. However\, although increased therapeutic efficacy has been realized\, direct visualization of how NPs interact with specific organelles has not been reported. How NPs interact with the cell nucleus\, for example\, will have implications not only for the fundamentals of cancer biology but also for the design of translational therapeutic agents. This talk will describe how drug-loaded gold nanostars can be transported to the cell nucleus and induce changes in nuclear phenotype. The gold nanoconstructs were trafficked to the nucleus via the shuttling protein nucleolin\, which is also a biomarker for cancer cells. Using ultrafast laser light\, we detached the drugs from the gold nanostar surface for delivery of the aptamers into the nucleus. Surprisingly\, we found that changes in the shape of the nucleus could be correlated with the biological response of the treated cancer cells. Prospects for whether this nanoconstruct and the nucleolin biomarker can be used as a general approach to deliver drugs to a wide variety of carcinomas in vitro will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Aephraim Steinberg\, University of Toronto\n\nI will discuss several ongoing projects which investigate quantum measurement\, its limitations\, and the range of strategies available. In particular\, I will describe an experiment using weak measurements and ideas from cluster-state quantum computing to demonstrate a violation of Heisenberg's proposed relationship between measurement precision and measurement disturbance\; and work investigating the use of weak-value amplification for measuring nonlinear optical phase shifts at the single-photon level. If time permits\, I will also discuss ongoing work on a "quantum data compression" protocol which would allow a small-scale quantum memory to store all the extractable information from a larger ensemble of identically prepared systems.
