DESCRIPTION:Francesca Declich\, Fulbright Research Scholar\, Stanford University\n\nFollowing the film\, there will be a short discussion with Francesca Declich\, the film's director\, who is currently a Fulbright Research Scholar at Stanford University. Francesca Declich is professor of socio cultural anthropology at the University of Urbino. She is Vice-President of the ASAI (Italian Association of the African Studies). She has studied at the London School of Economics and the school of Oriental and African Studies in London\, has taught African Peoples at Northwestern University\, has been Research Fellow at the Refugee Studies Programme of the University of Oxford\, visiting Fellow at The Institute of Modern Islam at the University of Leiden and has been member of the editorial staff of the French journal Politique Africaine. She has a wide experience of fieldwork in East Africa and the Horn having covered along the coast of the Indian Ocean Somalia\,Tanzania and Mozambique. Has written a variety of articles and books on feminine Muslim rituals in East Africa and the Horn\, dances and ritual performance\, gender and oral history\, applied anthropology\, violence of war.\n\nSince 2007 she is director of the Italian ethnological mission in Mozambique and Malawi. The project includes investigation of memories of domestic slavery in northern Mozambique and has produced ethnographic documentaries of which “ The Hidden Guarantee. \n\nThe Film Documentary “Coming of Age in Exile\,” has been shot in areas where the Somali Bantu refugees have been offered resettlement in Tanzania and the United States. The documentary texture follows narratives recounted by Somali Bantu refugees interviewed in the village of Chogo and the town of San Diego which highlights both constrains and opportunities embedded in the contexts and countries where the refugees have been offered asylum following brief or extended stays in refugee camps. Expectations of younger and older people are different and rarely coincide with the changes available in the countries of asylum\; disillusion may provoke anxieties. Racism from Black Americans is an issue that refugees in the United States did not envisage whereas unemployment after university education was unimaginable for those who settled in Tanzania. Many young people are firmly motivated to strengthen their education in order to help their families both in the US and in Africa but\, often\, do not find access even to secondary education.\n\nThe experiences in refugee camps shed new light on lives in exile as they play an important role in decisions concerning migratory projects. Patterns of migration count on the opportunities offered in refugee camps which\, however\, may become destinations where utopian migratory objective are nurtured and hopes dashed. The rapid loss in exile of the group’s language as well as of some core cultural traditions is perceived as an urging problem.
