SUMMARY:Journalism for Social Change: Understanding the Data of Child Maltreatment
UID:52248-ucb-events-calendar@berkeley.edu
ORGANIZER;CN="UC Berkeley Calendar Network":
LOCATION:Library North Gate Hall
DESCRIPTION:Emily Putnam-Hornstei\, Assistant Professor\, USC\nJill Duerr Berrick\, Professor School of Social Welfare\n\nDuring its third session\, Journalism for Social Change will delve into the media’s role in covering child abuse and neglect and then move into a substantive conversation about what we actually know. \n\nThe class and interested members of the public will hear from Jill Duerr Berrick\, at UC Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare and Emily Putnam-Hornstein who is a professor at USC’s School of Social Work.\n \nPutnam-Hornstein will share results from a recent study that she conducted in collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Barbara Needell\, which examines the at-birth risk factors that contribute to higher rates of child maltreatment in California. The study looked at variables ranging from a mother’s age at birth\, birth weight to race and shows a strong connection between many of those factors and heightened rates of maltreatment.
