SUMMARY:Dealing with People in Your Laboratory: “I wish I had done it sooner!” *Note: actual end time may vary.*
UID:48785-ucb-events-calendar@berkeley.edu
ORGANIZER;CN="UC Berkeley Calendar Network":
LOCATION:105 Sproul Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kathy Barker\, author of "At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator" and "At the Helm: Leading your Lab"\n\nThe people in your lab will have more to do with the success of your projects and your career than anything else\, but graduate school and postdoc training often don’t prepare scientists to work well with others. With advice gathered through interviews with experienced principal investigators\, Dr. Kathy Barker will discuss hiring and firing\, mediating conflict\, and walking the line between keeping a group happy and mentoring each individual. The focus of the talk will be on improving your own communication skills so you can be more effective and clear when running meetings or talking one-on-one with scientists\, as well as non-scientists.\n\n About the Presenter\n\nKathy Barker earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts and was an Assistant Professor at Rockefeller University when she left the lab to write "At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator\," which described the culture and expectations of the laboratory for newcomers. She followed that book with "At the Helm: Leading your Lab\," a manual for new principal investigators\, and is currently writing a book on scientists as activists.\n\n Registration Procedure\n\nIf you are interested in attending\, please RSVP with the following information to vspa@berkeley.edu and include "BARKER WORKSHOP" in the subject line. Please do not reply to this e-mail.\n\n1. family name\n\n2. first name\n\n3. institutional affiliation: UC Berkeley\, CHORI\, HHMI\, or LBL\n\n4. departmental affiliation\n\n5. status: graduate student\, postdoc\, visiting student researcher\, or visiting scholar
