SUMMARY:University Chorus: Hail\, Britannia!
UID:45070-ucb-events-calendar@berkeley.edu
ORGANIZER;CN="UC Berkeley Calendar Network":
LOCATION:Hertz Concert Hall
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Oltman\, guest director\n\nChoral masterworks from the British Isles: Music of Byrd\, Tallis\, Gibbons\, Vaughan Williams\, Wesley and Parry\n\nFor hundreds of years\, Britain has been a country set apart. The narrow ribbon of water which has always separated it from the European continent also helped to foster an incredibly unique musical heritage which took the best of European ideas and innovations and transformed them\, creating a distinctly "English" sound. From the <i>a cappella</i> motets masterworks of composers writing during the English Reformation\, to the roof-raising anthems which help define the modern Church of England\, this concert will take you on a journey through the musical history of a nation: one that is can be surprisingly bold\, yet subtle\; different\, yet familiar\; and appreciated by all\, yet unquestionably British.
