Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating present moment awareness imbued with kindness and curiosity. Tuning in to the body and breath can help us to deal with strong emotions like anger and fear. By learning to sit in stillness so we can recognize our emotions, we develop the capacity to choose our response when our buttons get pushed rather than be bound by habitual reactions. This training helps us live with greater equanimity and calm and awakens peace and joy in our lives.

The intention of this hands-on workshop is to introduce participants to the benefits of mindfulness, including stress reduction and increased executive function, and provide a space for them to express themselves creatively. The session will include brief movement and awareness practices, discussion, and journal writing inspired by a poem.

Laura Bean, executive director of Mindful Literacy, has thirty years of teaching and meditation experience and offers mindfulness and creative writing workshops to schools and businesses. She has an MFA in Creative Writing and presented a mindful writing workshop at the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness in 2016. An article about her work was published last October in the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.
