Andreas Wanke, Freie Universität Berlin (FUB)

UC Berkeley Office of Sustainability & Energy

As the core of the science and education system, universities play a key role in shaping sustainable development. Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) is committed to this responsibility. FUB started to establish a systematic energy and environmental management in 2001. Based on a university-wide energy controlling, technical and structural energy efficiency programs, an incentive system for energy saving and a certified environmental management system, it has succeeded, among other things, in reducing the university's energy consumption by over 26 percent within a decade. Since 2015, the university has further developed its campus-oriented activities into a holistic sustainability management and, for example, established new teaching formats addressing sustainable development and – together with its strategic partners in Beijing, Vancouver, Jerusalem and Saint Petersburg - the University Alliance for Sustainability (UAS).

Andreas, head of the Unit for Sustainability and Energy Management, which is assigned directly to the Executive Board, will present the milestones and main outcomes of this process and in particular focus on the energy efficiency programs and the bonus scheme for energy conservation. The latter enables the faculties to earn money with energy savings. Additionally he will give some key information on the University Alliance for Sustainability, which could be a future platform for cooperation between UCB and FUB.
