Rope-A-Dope Politics and the Erosion of Democratic Norms

Many advanced democracies are currently characterized by norm-eroding politics which manifests in increased levels of populism and blame generation. The erosion of norms is a potentially far-reaching challenge for democracy. In his lecture, Markus Hinterleitner conceptualizes the process of political norm erosion capturing the interactions of norm violators and norm defenders with the metaphor of ‘rope-a-dope’ politics, named after a boxing strategy popularized by Muhammad Ali. The lecture aims to demonstrate and discuss the potential of metaphors to describe complex political conflicts and it wants to explore options for the preservation of democratic norms.
Markus Hinterleitner is a political scientist at UC Berkeley’s Institute of European Studies. He received his PhD from the University of Bern in Switzerland. His research examines political blame games and their consequences, and seeks to understand elite behavior under pressure.
