Research Colloquium: Dr. Jerry Brandell "Psychoanalysis in the Halls of Social Work Academe: Can this patient be saved?"

Psychoanalytic theory is not a unified body of knowledge, but rather, composed of multiple theories, models, and schemata pertaining to development, psychopathology, and clinical method and technique. It is a literature of vast scope whose evolution now spans 125 years. This history is actually fraught with points of convergence and dissonance; important issues and controversies surrounding the use of dynamic principles in clinical social work education is, accordingly, a principal theme of this talk. I will submit that important developments in the practice world may be meaningfully guided by contemporary psychodynamic thought, and conclude by examining changes in the academy and the profession of social work, and what these changes may ultimately mean for clinical social work education.

Dr. Jerry Brandell is a Distinguished Professor at Wayne State University School of Social Work, where he has taught since 1992. He has led workshops and lectured widely on clinical topics in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. His scholarly interests include theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis, the portrayal of psychoanalysis in the cinema, clinical process in psychotherapy, psychodynamic supervision, and therapeutic storytelling with children. A practicing psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, Brandell has published thirteen books. In 2019, Columbia University will release a revised, expanded second edition of his co-authored book, Trauma: Contemporary Directions in Theory, Practice, and Research. Brandell is also the (Founding) Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Social Work.
