Developing 3-D Imaging Sensors: Problems and Technologies: SPIE Visiting Lecturer

We discuss technologies for 3-D imaging-taking cameras, also variously called 3-QD rangefinders, telemeters or lidars. We start from the basic configurations used to build single-point laser rangefinders, that is, triangulation, sine-wave and pulsed techniques, and then analyzing the system requirements on parameters like: covered range, illumination power, detector noise, stray light. After discussing triangulation, or parallax-based 3-D's, we develop two exemplary design of 3-D camera: (i) the pulsed-source time-of-flight based on SPAD detector in standard CMOS Silicon 120-nm Technology, and (ii) a new approach of sine-wave modulated source with a CMOS Silicon photo-detector, incorporating in a single chip optical detection and signal demodulation. For both photo-receivers we discuss in some detail of the circuit design and implementation in CMOS process.
