Garden Closed

Special Event | January 2 – December 4, 2018 the first Tuesday of the month every month |  UC Botanical Garden

 Botanical Garden

The garden is closed the first Tuesday of every month.

-Why is the Garden Closed one day a month?
For the safety of the public and the safety of the collection, the Garden’s Horticultural staff need one day per month to complete jobs that may pose safety risks to visitors, such as dropping tree limbs, renovating paths, or controlling pests.

-I’m only in Berkeley for one day from somewhere very far away and the purpose of my trip was to see the Garden! Can’t I just take a quick
peek? We are so sorry for the inconvenience and the disappointment, however, the University’s Risk Management Policies prevent us from allowing the public into the collection today.

-I see people in the Garden. Why are they allowed in and not me? Anyone in the Garden on our First Closed Tuesday is either a member of our staff or a volunteer. They have specific permission to be in the Garden today. Staff and volunteers are covered by the University’s insurance should an injury occur. The public is not.

-I don’t need to see the Garden, but I have a question for a staff person. Can I speak to someone? Because our horticulturalists’ primary responsibility is to care for the collection, we have a limited ability to answer questions from the public. Plant questions are best brought tour Sick Plant Clinic on the first Saturday of the month. The clinic is free and is staffed by UC staff and volunteers. We also have expanded plant sales on Thursdays from 10:30 am-1:30 pm when many of our volunteer propagators are working and available to help you. Please bring your question back at either of these times. For questions about programs, memberships, tours, rentals, donations, volunteering, etc. please call 510-642-7082 or email us at

-I would like to buy something from the Garden Shop. Since the Shop is here in the entrance, can I do that? The Garden Shop is also closed today.

-If I can’t see the Garden, are there other gardens nearby?
We suggest you visit the nearby Regional Parks Botanical Garden in Tilden Park - a collection of native plants.

Thank you for your interest in the Garden! We hope you can return to visit again in the future when we are open to the publi, 510-643-2755
