The Moral Imperative of Better School Quality Measures

Today, parents and policymakers can access school- and district-level data in historically unprecedented quantities. Yet available information largely consists of student standardized test scores, which offer a limited picture of school performance and often indicate more about student demography than about educational practice. Consequently, such data may produce a distorted picture of school quality and, in turn, foster a host of unintended consequences like residential segregation. This talk will discuss a project designed to produce a broader and more diverse range of information about K-12 education, transforming how schools are measured and held accountable. Drawing on his work with the Massachusetts Consortium for Innovative Education Assessment, Dr. Schneider will discuss the consortium's comprehensive framework for measuring school quality, the impact on stakeholders, and the future of accountability policy.
