Siobhan Somerville: "Staging Citizenship: Race and the Queer History of Naturalization in the U.S."

Lecture: Lectures & Special Events | April 4 | 4 p.m. |  Durham Studio Theater (Dwinelle Hall)

Siobhan Somerville, University of Illinois

Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies

Siobhan Somerville offers a queer history of naturalization, a process that tends to be overshadowed by immigration in existing scholarship on citizenship. This talk historicizes the aesthetic and performative aspects of the naturalization ceremony itself, with particular attention to discourses of sexuality and race.
