Detection with scan and average likelihood ratio

Seminar: Berkeley-Stanford Joint Colloquium at Berkeley | November 10 | 4-5 p.m. | 60 Evans Hall

Guenther Walther, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, Stanford University

Statistics, Department of

Scan statistics are the standard tool for a range of detection
problems, such as the detection of spatial disease clusters. There have
been a number of recent claims in the literature, based on empirical
findings, that scan statistics are inferior to an approach that
involves the average likelihood ratio. The talk will will look at this
issue and derive some results and guidelines on how to address the
multiple testing problem inherent in these detection tasks.
