Camino Seguro: Empowering Women and Children in Guatemala

Lecture | November 10 | Boalt Hall, School of Law, Room 100

California Asylum Representation Clinic (CARC)

A lunchtime talk by Jayne Fleming, Pro Bono Counsel at Reed Smith LLP, and Fredy Maldanado of Camino Seguro to speak about the important work of Camino Seguro in empowering women and children in Guatemala.

Camino Seguro works with children and families living in and around the Guatemala City garbage dump. Within a safe and caring environment, they provide a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self esteem and confidence. The organization focuses on literacy as a path to overcoming extreme poverty. The mothers of Camino Seguro participate in literacy classes and have started a jewelry cooperative to supplement their earnings from the dump.

The event is open to all students and members of the law school community. There is no charge for the luncheon. Guests are invited to make a contribution to support programs for the mothers and children of Camino Seguro.

Event sponsored by: Reed Smith LLP
Event organized by: California Asylum Representation Clinic (CARC)
Event co-sponsored: Environmental Law Society (ELS), Boalt Hall Committee for Human Rights (BHCHR), La Raza Law Students Association, Students for Environmental & Economic Justice (SEEJ), and Ecology Law Quarterly (ELQ)
