The Place of Balkan Muslims in the Shaping of European Islam

Lecture | February 26 | 12 p.m. | 223 Moses Hall

Dr. Xavier Bougarel, French National Center for Scientific Research

Religion, Politics and Globalization Program (RPGP)), Institute for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES)

Since 1990, the emergence of Balkan Muslim populations as autonomous political actors has been reflected by the formation of their own political parties and open expressions of cultural and political claims. The collapse of communist regimes explains the appearance of Islamist currents, but apparent "reislamization" processes are in reality linked to the reshaping of the relationship between Islam and national identity and do not really question the secularization of the Balkan Muslim populations. Dr. Bougarel will discuss what role Balkan Muslims will play in European Islam as it develops.
Lunch will be served.
