Promoting Algebraic Thinking: BAMP Summer Institute - Teachers of Grades 6-12

Workshop: All Professional Development: BAMP P.D. | June 18 – 22, 2012 every day | 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. | Lawrence Hall of Science, Room 150

Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS)

The Promoting Algebraic Thinking Institute will focus on pedagogical strategies and techniques that help students (and teachers!) see algebra as a tool useful for understanding their world, rather than as a set of mostly unrelated techniques that need to be memorized. Starting from familiar, but also perplexing contexts engages students and motivates them to see mathematics as a sense-making enterprise. As we engage with content from the relevant CCSSM domains, we will remain mindful of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, which define mathematical proficiency. Academic language development, particularly for English learners, will be integrated throughout, and equity and social justice concerns will be addressed.
