A Transit Focused Startup: Preliminary Results

Lecture | March 18 | 4-5 p.m. | 534 Davis Hall

Dylan Saloner, PhD, CEO and co-founder of Via Analytics

Institute of International Studies

Why do buses bunch? How should they be controlled? How can they be controlled? Does our theory model real world conditions? Can we actually test our methods in the wild? Could we turn this into a company? Lawyers ... really? What's a “Benefit Corporation”? Android? iPhone? Web? Why is there a null pointer error here? Should we raise funds? How? What exactly are our product offerings? Do we really need office space? How do we get customers? How much should we charge them? What's a W-9? HTTP, XHTML, CSS, SVG, D3, REST API .... HUH? Why is there a null pointer error here? Marketing ... really? Transit agencies make rational decisions, right? Can you run a business and make your software open source? Did you know it's already 2 AM? What the heck is this null pointer error about!? Financial projections ... really? The drivers aren't actually doing that are they?

Why start a startup?
