ITS Friday Seminar - How do Cars Perform in Real-World India?

Seminar | November 30 | 4-5 p.m. | 534 Davis Hall

Dr. Anand Gopal, International Energy Studies Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Institute of Transportation Studies

Car ownership in India is expected to boom over the next three decades, causing a monumental environmental challenge in terms of climate change, air pollution and oil demand. Fortunately, since most of the Indian cars that will be on the road in 2030 are yet to be manufactured, we are presented with an opportunity to leapfrog to the cleanest automotive technologies for India. However, it is important to understand the real-world use of cars in India in order to accurately assess the potential of each automotive technology.

In this talk, I will
1. Describe our inexpensive, innovative approach to procure high-fidelity, real-world vehicle use data from Indian cities.
2. Compare the modeled performance of conventional IC engine cars in real-world India to their labeled performance.
3. Show the modeled results of the real-world performance of hybrid electric powertrains and outline the reasons for their greater than expected superiority.
