A Woman Among Warlords: Human Rights and the War for "Hearts and Minds"

Lecture | November 10 | 7 p.m. | International House, Chevron Auditorium

Malalai Joya

International House, Peace and Conflict Studies, Afghan Student Association

Listen to the compelling and inspirational words of the prominent Afghan politician, Malalai Joya. Often called “the bravest woman in Afghanistan,” Joya has taken a strong position in defending women’s rights and speaking out against warlords within the government. After her election to the Afghan Parliament in 2005, she was banned for claiming it to be an asylum for “warlords and theocrats” and has since received numerous death threats and survived several assassination attempts. Nevertheless, she remains remarkably devoted to speaking out against human rights violations and corruption within Afghanistan today. She will be signing her autobiography, entitled “A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice," prior to her lecture.
