Spring 2020 IES Undergraduate Research Conference: European Identities: Past, Present, Future

Conference/Symposium | March 6 | 223 Moses Hall

 Institute of European Studies

The Institute of European Studies is pleased to announce the 2020 undergraduate research conference in European Studies, titled “European Identities: Past, Present, Future.” Berkeley undergraduates from a wide range of academic disciplines—political science, economics, literature, language and cultural studies, history, global studies, and more— are encouraged to submit abstracts by January 31, 2020.

The theme of this year’s undergraduate conference is Europe and identity. The conference strives to analyze European topics through an interdisciplinary lens, and integration of multiple academic perspectives is encouraged.

Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to: What does it mean to be European? How has European integration, facilitated by the European Union, simplified or complicated this question? What, if any, is the relationship between local, regional, national, and supranational identity? How is identity constructed— through language, art and cultural production, geography, race and ethnicity, religion? How are some of Europe’s most pressing contemporary issues, from migration to the rise of populism, related to notions of identity? As Europe grows more diverse and its role in global politics changes, how will identity shape the continent’s dynamics moving forward?

Students are encouraged to pursue the presentation format that best suits their unique skillsets and interests, including written papers, posters, multimedia presentations, and more. Please keep in mind that the final conference presentation must be no more than 15 minutes long.

Deadline to submit abstracts: Friday, January 31, 2020, 5pm (click link in title above for webform)
