About the speaker:

Zechun Hu is an associate professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. He received the B.S. degree and Ph.D. degree from Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Shaanxi, China, in 2000 and 2006, respectively. He worked in Shanghai Jiao Tong University after graduation and also worked in University of Bath as a research officer from 2009 to 2010. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University in 2010 where he is now co-directing the smart grid operation and optimization laboratory. His major research interests include vehicle to grid techniques, applications of energy storage in power systems, optimal planning & operation of power systems, and power markets.
From 2010, Dr. Hu has involved in more ten research and pilot projects on electric vehicles and smart grid in China. He has published more than 60 papers and won several prizes for his research achievements on this area. Currently, he is leading a major project supported by NSFC. This project focuses on the synergy of electrified transportation and renewable energy systems.

Talk Abstract:

With the help of government policies and technology improvements, the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) have experienced an explosive growth in recent years around the world. The transition of vehicles’ refueling from gas stations to charging stations will have remarkable impact on energy systems. In this talk, I will first introduce the
development of EVs in some major countries and China. Then, I will discuss the optimal investments on charging facilities for large scale adoption of EVs. Lastly but most importantly, I will share our ideas on the key technical and practical issues that will promote the synergy of electrified transportation and energy systems. This synergy can boost integration of renewable generations and improve efficiency of energy systems. Along with this, I will also introduce the state-of- arts of research progresses and challenges.
