Title: Cloud Robotics
Abstract: A world filled with personal robots is inevitable but a lack of strong software infrastructure to support those robots is slowing progress. By offloading CPU and data intensive computation to the cloud, we can make robots lighter, cheaper, and smarter. The same developers that work on commodity web and mobile apps today can accelerate the pace of robotics research and development if we make high functioning robots affordable and universally accessible.
Bio: Damon Kohler has been a software engineer at Google for over six years. He currently lives and works in Munich, Germany where he is exploring robust SLAM and ways to make robotics more accessible through integration with cloud services. He created Scripting Layer for Android (SL4A) which is used by thousands of developers to write and run Python scripts on Android. More recently, in collaboration with Willow Garage, he created rosjava, bringing ROS to Android and allowing roboticists to leverage powerful new mobile devices.
