Beyond Engineering: Career Panel for Engineering Students

Engineering students are invited to attend a unique engineering career panel featuring Berkeley Engineering alumni working in non-engineering fields. Alumni panelists include Ghia Griarte (B.S. ’86 EECS) Managing Director at Saints Capital, Katharine Greenbaum (B.S. ’95 IEOR, M.P.P. ’05) Director of Foundation and Government Support at California Academy of Sciences, George Chao (B.S. ’03 Eng. Physics) Regional Manager at American Financial Golden Life, Anrica Deb (B.S. ’01 MSE, M.Jour. ’09) Science Journalist and Liwen Mah (B.S. ’94 IEOR, J.D. ’05), Associate at Fenwick & West LLP (please see below for panelist bios).

Join us as these alumni share what it’s like to work outside a traditional engineering job and offer tips and techniques on how to find the right career for you. Refreshments will be served.

PANELIST BIOS:

George Chao (B.S. ’03 Eng. Physics), Regional Manager at American Financial Golden Life, has been working with AFGL for the past 2 years. He helps individuals plan their retirement and also helps startup companies setup their retirement plans for their employees. George is currently volunteering with the College of Engineering GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) program by hosting young alumni mixers. Mr. Chao is also the president of CNetwork, a 4,000 member networking organization in the Bay Area.

Anrica Deb (B.S. ’01 MSE, M.Jour. ’09), Science Journalist, currently writes for Mission Loc@l an initiative in hyper-local coverage developed by UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. She’s also working as a freelancer for the trade journal "California Energy Markets" and has written for the Associated Press in Amsterdam as an intern. Ms. Deb has worked as a tech in Professor Paul Alivisatos’s lab; and as a full-time staff research associate at Professor Wendell Lim's UCSF lab studying signal transduction in human proteins. Anrica also works for her family’s small energy consultancy business in the South Bay.

Ghia Griarte (B.S. ’86 EECS), Managing Director at Saints Capital, began her career as an electrical systems engineer at Lockheed Martin's Aeronautics division developing subsystems for anti-submarine and advanced tactical fighter aircrafts. She also served as chairman of the corporate avionics taskforce. Ghia is responsible for Saints Capital’s investments in communications, specifically wireless, software, and infrastructure and storage sectors. Ms. Griarte has also received a dual degree MBA and Masters of Engineering Management from Northwestern.

Katharine Greenbaum (B.S. ’95 IEOR, M.P.P. ’05), Director of Foundation and Government Support at the California Academy of Sciences, began her career as a project analyst with Fair, Isaac (now known as FICO), building predictive models for the credit card industry. After serving as a recruiter, project manager, and product manager at FICO, Katharine left the for-profit sector in favor of mission-driven work. She most recently served as Campaign Director for the Campaign for the New Academy, helping raise $500-million in support for the Academy’s new facility in Golden Gate Park.

Liwen Mah (B.S. ’94 IEOR, J.D. ’05), Associate at Fenwick & West LLP, is an attorney whose practice focuses on copyright, patent and trade secrets. During law school, Mr. Mah served as a judicial extern for Magistrate Judge Bernard Zimmerman in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. Mr. Mah also served as Article Editor for the "Ecology Law Quarterly" and has published with the "California Law Review" and the "Ecology Law Quarterly." Prior to joining Fenwick & West, Mr. Mah worked in semiconductor quality and reliability for Altera Corporation.
